Dean's Office

Office Hours

In-person office hours are 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Please contact the Executive Assistant to the Dean, lisalovu@buffalo.edu, to schedule a meeting with the Dean.

Requests for the Dean’s attendance at academic events, alumni and development, may be submitted via email, phone call or in person, with information like date, time, location, and background information that may be helpful in preparing the Dean for attendance. We ask that events are scheduled as far in advance as possible.

Additional services and support provided by the Office of the Dean include:

  • preparation and scheduling of faculty meetings
  • maintenance of the official record of faculty governance   
  • law school-specific room access within O’Brian Hall via our swipe card access system
  • scheduling and room availability for non-academic events within O’Brian Hall law classrooms (additional information may be required for events to coordinate with public safety, the Office of Government relations, Alumni and Development, Student Services or the Career services offices, or other related organizations and business units, depending on the nature of the event.

Admissions

The Office of Admissions is responsible for identifying and recruiting applicants to the School of Law’s academic program through a variety of events and activities including, but not limited to, law and graduate fairs, open houses, campus visits, webinars, and LSAT prep events. The admissions office oversees all aspects of the evaluation and admissions process, including working alongside the Admissions Committee to assess and decision J.D. and LL.M. applicants and award new student scholarships. In addition, the admissions staff provides counseling to applicants and cultivates relationships with prelaw advisors and community partners to help enroll a qualified and diverse student body.

Advancement (Philanthropy & Engagement)

The Office of Advancement and Alumni works to advance the School of Law and University by: encouraging partnerships among internal and external communities, including our over 12,000 law alumni, throughout the country and internationally; providing opportunities for meaningful and enduring engagement through communication, outreach, events and programs, volunteer and educational opportunities, and a network of connections; and by securing philanthropic and strategic investments.

Advocacy Institute

The Advocacy Institute helps students cultivate the skills, discipline, and ethics necessary to become creative and principled litigators. The Institute serves as host to the law school’s programs in Trial Advocacy, Appellate Advocacy, and Mediation. These programs provide students with training from leading judges, trial attorneys, and faculty. The dedication of these practitioners and scholars enables our students to develop the litigation skills necessary to successfully advocate on behalf of their future clients.

Alumni Affairs

The Office of Alumni Affairs provides connections and opportunities for UB law students to get to know and learn from other lawyers, judges and members of the larger legal community, many of whom hire our graduates. We assist more than 12,000 alumni in private practice, public interest, business, government or other areas --at all stages of their professional careers-- with networking, social and professional events, Continuing Legal Education (CLE), career connections, mentoring, reunions, and student professional development. In addition to Buffalo, we support the networking events and activities of regional alumni chapters in Albany, Central New York, New York City, Rochester, and Washington DC.

Law Information Technology Services

The School of Law's Information Technology Department provides a variety of services that will support your research and teaching needs. We actively partner with UB Information Technology , UB's Office of Curriculum, Assessment and Teaching Transformation and the Charles B. Sears Law Library  to provide faculty with the best possible computing infrastructure to support their work.

Law IT Services is available as your first stop for technology questions and we are ready to assist with any computer, printer, or network issues you may encounter.

Additionally, we will assist with classroom technology and online teaching applications. We will also work with our university partners to provide you with enterprise level support for computing and classroom instructional technologies.

Career Services

The Career Services Office (CSO) is a resource available only to UB law students and alumni, and the legal employers who seek to hire them. Our career counselors all have J.D.s and assist in summer, academic year, and post graduate job searches of students and alumni on an unlimited and free basis.  We provide the assistance, encouragement and support necessary to enable law students to discover and pursue their career paths. CSO also provides free services to employers to post jobs, participate in career fairs and hold on campus interviews of UB law students.

Communications Office

The Office of Communications promotes and protects the School of Law’s reputation. We manage the content and design of the law school’s official print and digital publications; maintain the law school’s website and all social media channels; facilitate the distribution and promotion of law school and/or faculty news both internally and externally; and oversee the appropriate use of the law school’s name and brand. We assist all departments and faculty members with messaging and the promotion of their work, and we address any communications crisis or concern.

Diversity, Equity and Belonging

As part of the Office of Student Affairs, the Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Belonging works with students, faculty, administrators, and staff to promote diversity, inclusion, and cultural competency throughout all levels of the School of Law. Externships and Judicial Externships provide law students with unique legal and public service experience as they work in a variety of government and non-profit organizations.

Faculty Assistants

The faculty assistants perform a wide variety of administrative and clerical duties in support of the faculty.  They assist with class preparations, organizing materials and posting documents on UBLearns.  They provide general office assistance including printing, scanning and photocopying.  The faculty assistants serve as the initial point of contact for the faculty members.

Law Library Services

The Charles B. Sears Law Library occupies six floors in the center of the School of Law, and boasts a variety of different study spaces available for all UB students. Collections and services are tailored to support the research and educational missions of the UB School of Law community.

As the only research-level law library in Western New York, the Charles B. Sears Law Library is an important community resource that serves the legal information needs of the UB community, the practicing bar, and the public at large.

Records and Registration

Records and Registration manages all aspects of class registration and course scheduling, final examinations, degree conferral, bar certifications, academic transcripts, posting of grades, degree audits, and other important processes requiring certification of student status.

Student Affairs

The Office of Student Affairs provides a broad canopy of advising, support, engagement, and resources for law students and the law school community.  

The Vice Dean for Student Affairs provides individual advising on academic requirements, academic planning, student support and wellness, referrals for University Student Services--such as counseling and accommodations--and planning for personal concerns, unexpected occurrences, and emergencies. Students and faculty should feel free to make Student Affairs their first stop when seeking information and resources.

OSA is available to:

  • Assist student groups with events and programs
  • Provide advisement for student groups
  • Assist student groups with event planning
  • Advice groups on picking a date for an event
  • Provide swipe card access to student group offices
  • Facilitate law student orientation and commencement
