Fun Things to Do in NYC

Here’s a place to start your own list.  No order.

  • Central Park.  Walk, watch, wonder.  No better place to see the outrageous extravagance. Hop into a museum or four.
  • Staten Island Ferry.  It’s free.  Goes right by the Statue of Liberty.
  • Visit the NYC Public Library on 5th Avenue (the lions).
  • Ice skating at Rockefeller Center, under the gold statue (Prometheus).  Alternative: Bryant Park, behind the Library, followed by drinks at the legendary literary watering hole, the Algonquin.
  • Fifth Avenue.  Shop there, or act like you do.
  • Visit the Bronx Zoo.
  • Catch the taping of a TV show in Rockefeller Center or Chelsea.
  • Coney Island or Rockaway.  Go to the beach.
  • See the Apollo Theater in Harlem.
  • Broadway/Times Square/Theater District.  Enjoy the lights.  Watch the people.  See a show.   It’s quiet after about 2:00 a.m., and everything reflects.
  • Walk the Highline.  Fantastic and peaceful view of the City.  Sun sets over the Hudson down concrete canyons.
  • Hang out in the Chelsea Hotel.  Act like you are in a band.  Or a poet.  Or make movies.  Or just knew Andy Warhol.
  • Take a fast ferry to Brooklyn at night.
  • Empire State Building or Top of the Rock for big views.
  • Clubs.  Be careful.
  • Dine on dim sum in Chinatown, or handmade ramen in Hell’s Kitchen, or Korean BBQ in NoMad.
  • Sports.  So many sports.  Let’s say Knicks at the Garden?
  • McSorley’s Old Ale House (Since 1854; Abe Lincoln; sawdust on floor)
  • Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).  Finally get it.
  • Pizza.  Argue endlessly about which one is best.  Dismiss all pizza from anywhere else.
  • Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  Nation of Immigrants.
  • United Nations Plaza.
  • Rooftop bars and restaurants abound.  Argue over your favorite.
  • Karaoke.   “If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere . . . “ “Sweet Caroline, good times never seemed so good . . . “ Sometimes the Broadway kids join in and make everybody sound better.
