Ralph L. Halpern ’53 was honored by the American Law Institute in Washington, D.C. Halpern, formerly senior counsel for Jaeckle Fleischmann & Mugel, is a solo practitioner in Buffalo, where he resides.
Jerome M. Hesch ’70 is director of the 43rd annual Notre Dame Tax & Estate Planning Institute in South Bend, Ind. Hesch is an adjunct professor at University of Miami School of Law and Florida International University. He is also special senior tax counsel with Jeffrey M. Verdon Law Group in Newport Beach, Calif.
Hon. James A.W. McLeod ’74 received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Minority Bar Foundation in Buffalo, where he resides. McLeod is a Buffalo City Court judge.
Louis P. DiLorenzo ’76 is listed in the 2017 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. DiLorenzo is managing partner in the labor, employment, employee benefits and immigration practice group of Bond Schoeneck & King in the New York City office. He is an emeritus member of the School of Law’s Dean’s Advisory Council. He resides in Romulus, N.Y.
Dan D. Kohane ’79 was elected a member of the American Law Institute. Kohane is a senior partner with Hurwitz & Fine in the Buffalo office and an adjunct faculty member at the School of Law. He lives in Buffalo.
Vincent L. Scarsella ’79 published the book Winning Is Everything, the third in his “Lawyers Gone Bad” series of novels. Scarsella is a former prosecutor and tax attorney in Buffalo. He resides in Davenport, Fla.
Gregory T. Ivancic ’82 has been inducted into St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute’s Signum Fidei Society in Buffalo. A partner with Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman in the Buffalo office, Ivancic lives in Kenmore, N.Y.
Dr. Murray Levine ’83 published his first romance novel, New Beginnings (BookLocker, 2017). Levine is a UB Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Psychology. He is a Buffalo resident.
Richard E. Gottlieb ’85 was named co-chair of the financial services group of Manatt Phelps & Phillips. He is a partner practicing in the firm’s Chicago and Los Angeles offices. Gottlieb is an emeritus member of the School of Law’s Dean’s Advisory Council and resides in Glencoe, Illinois.
Gary A. Farrell ’86 received the Person of the Year Award from the Kings County Criminal Bar Association in New York City. Farrell is a criminal defense attorney in New York City and a past president of the Kings County Criminal Bar Association. He lives in Larchmont, N.Y.
Christine M. Valkenburgh ’90 received the 2017 Hon. Michael F. Dillon Attorneys for Children Award from the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, 4th Department, in Rochester, N.Y. She is a partner with Cole & Valkenburgh, practicing family law in Bath, N.Y., where she resides.
Mark F. Steiner ’91 was named a lifetime achievement member by America’s Top 100 Attorneys. He was recognized for his work ethic and community involvement. Steiner is a Buffalo attorney and resident.
Lisa M. Mueller ’93 received the M. Dolores Denman Lady Justice Award from the Western New York Chapter of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, in Buffalo. The School of Law’s vice dean for communications, Mueller lives on Grand Island, N.Y.
Marianne Mariano ’94 was elected vice president of the Bar Association of Erie County. Mariano is a federal public defender with the Federal Public Defender’s Office of Western New York. She recently received the UB Law Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumna Award for public service. Mariano is a member of the national advisory board of the School of Law’s Advocacy Institute. She is a Buffalo resident.
Lenora B. Foote ’97 received the President’s Award from the Western New York Chapter of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, in Buffalo. Foote is executive assistant to Hon. Gerald Whalen ’83, presiding justice of the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, 4th Department, in Buffalo, where she resides. She is a past president of the UB Law Alumni Association.
David J. Luzon ’97 has become a partner with Barclay Damon in the Buffalo office. He practices in the firm’s trusts and estates group. Luzon resides in Amherst, N.Y.

Michael S. Cerrone ’99, a Hamburg, N.Y., resident, received a Director’s Award from the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. He is an assistant U.S. attorney with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of New York, in Buffalo.
Tiffany R. Perry ’00 received the Trailblazer Award from the Minority Bar Foundation in Buffalo. Perry is a court attorney referee with Erie County Family Court in Buffalo. A vice president of the Law Alumni Association, Perry is a Buffalo resident.
Peter M. Carey ’01 was named Campus Security Director of the Year by Buffalo State College. Carey is chief of the University Police Department at the college. He lives in Batavia, N.Y.
Jennifer N. Weidner ’02 has been admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. She is senior vice president and general counsel with Canandaigua National Bank and Trust Company in Pittsford, N.Y. Weidner lives in Victor, N.Y.
Ian T. Lane ’03 has become a partner with Sherin and Lodgen in Boston where he counsels clients regarding real estate matters. He was previously counsel with Seyfarth Shaw in Boston. Lane lives in Lexington, Mass.

Joseph M. Hanna ’05 of Amherst, N.Y., was named to the 2017 On the Rise Top 40 Young Lawyers list by the American Bar Association. Hanna is a partner with Goldberg Segalla in Buffalo.
