What is a 3+3 Program?
A 3+3 program allows undergraduate students the unique opportunity to complete both their Baccalaureate and Juris Doctor degrees in just six years of full-time study, in comparison to the traditional seven-year timeframe. With this ability comes several unique requirements, and delicate timelines to be followed, but, for high achieving students, it means saving one full year of time and tuition. This is achievable through a unique partnership agreement, through the University at Buffalo School of Law and more than Ten Partner Institutions which allows students who complete three years or 90 credits of undergraduate study to progress to law school, and, following their first year of professional study, transfer back their J.D. credits to their undergraduate institution, allowing them to receive their bachelor’s degree.

Additionally, students receive free LSAT preparation and can take part in the premier event of the program: the 3+3 Networking Reception, which invites current 3+3 students to connect with faculty and administration within both the law school and undergraduate institution. What motivated you to choose the 3+3 Accelerated Program?
I chose the 3+3 program because I wanted to fast-track my education. I knew I wanted to start law school as soon as possible, and the 3+3 program was the most effective way to achieve that goal.
How did you find the transition from undergraduate studies to law school?
Law school has definitely been more demanding than my undergraduate studies. That being said, I felt prepared for the transition. I focused on time management during my undergraduate education, which proved worthwhile as I quickly learned that time management is paramount to a successful law school career. The transition is manageable if you remain realistic about the expectations of law school and prepare yourself.
What resources or programming have you found most helpful during your time in the program?
The law school staff and the various 3+3 events played extremely important roles during my time in the program. If I ever had questions or concerns about anything relating to law school or the 3+3 program, I would reach out to Benjamin Rogers, Assistant Director of Admissions, and he would get back to me promptly to calm my nerves. At the various events hosted by the law school, specifically the 3+3 Networking Reception, I met other students in the same program. I had the opportunity to ask questions to current law students as well, which was very helpful. The application process can be daunting, but UB provided assistance to guide me along the way.
What advice would you give to prospective students considering the 3+3 program?
I would tell students to engage with others in the program and attend the many events hosted by the law school. This is an effective way to expand your network and develop an understanding of what is expected of law students. Additionally, the sense of camaraderie that I experienced in my first year developed from my relationships with my classmates and other upperclassmen at the law school. Building these relationships early makes law school rewarding and fun!
