Organization: Hon. Jeremiah J. McCarthy, U.S. District Court, WDNY

How would you describe your experience?

Logo for the United States District Court, Western District of New York.

I was able to learn so much while interning with Judge McCarthy in the Western District of New York. In chambers, I was able to be a part of the judicial process by drafting memoranda, conducting research, and assisting the clerks with other tasks. I was also able to observe court proceedings, including everything from initial appearances all the way through to sentencing.

What impacted you the most?

Being able to observe court proceedings was so impactful to me. Witnessing real-life proceedings firsthand,(rather than dramatized TV episodes) allowed me to demystify the legal process, while also allowing me to connect what I learned in the classroom to real life. It was so valuable observing everything from the judges to the lawyers and court staff.

What would you like to share with our donors?

Without this fellowship, I would not have been able to accept such a valuable internship. This opportunity allowed me to learn so much this summer, and I am extremely grateful.
