Today, we're diving into the University at Buffalo School of Law’s burgeoning focus on military law, coupled with the abundant opportunities available to veteran students. Read on as we salute all the perks of pursuing a military law career through University at Buffalo School of Law!
Let's start by exploring one of the most recent additions to our student group landscape: the Military Law and Veterans Association (MLVA). Launched in fall of 2023, the MLVA has quickly become a thriving hub for veterans and military supporters alike. Their mission? To raise awareness of the diverse career opportunities available as a judge advocate within the military, while also providing insights into the intricacies of military law. The group hosts a variety of events throughout the year that include guest lectures, workshops and networking events. Their work allows students the opportunity to learn from experts in the field, while simultaneously honoring servicemen and women.
What sets our school apart? The guidance of Prof. David Coombs – a stand-out faculty member who joined the UB Law faculty in the 2023 academic year, bringing along experience from a 21-year career in military justice, serving as a prosecutor, defense attorney, professor and defense appellate attorney. His storied military background is buttressed by a recent appointment to the advisory committee of the Veterans Treatment Courts for the State of New York, as well as being named Fellow of the National Institute of Military Justice. His dedication to serving veterans and his deep understanding of military law make him an invaluable asset to our students.
In a recent interview, Prof. Coombs shared his insights on the intersection of law and military service, emphasizing the importance of providing support and resources for veteran students. He highlighted the unique challenges faced by veterans transitioning to civilian life and underscored the role that education and advocacy play in addressing these issues.
Moreover, Professor Coombs's involvement in the State’s Veterans Treatment Courts underscores our school's commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of veterans. These specialized courts offer veterans facing legal challenges the opportunity to access resources and support tailored to their unique needs, providing an alternative to traditional judicial proceedings.
University at Buffalo School of Law’s commitment to veterans extends beyond the classroom and into the very fabric of our curriculum. Our comprehensive approach to military law covers a wide range of topics, including the Uniform Code of Military Justice, veterans' benefits, and the intricacies of international law as it pertains to armed conflict. Through innovative coursework and experiential learning opportunities, students gain the knowledge and skills needed to navigate this complex and ever-evolving field.
And let's not forget about the myriad opportunities available through the Military Law and Veterans Association! From networking events and guest lectures to community service projects and advocacy initiatives, the association offers a wealth of resources to help veteran students connect with peers, mentors and industry professionals.
Whether you're interested in pursuing a career in military law, advocating for veterans' rights, or simply exploring the intersection of law and service, we have the resources, the faculty and the community support to help you succeed.
