The University at Buffalo School of Law is proud to have a diverse group of faculty members who bring insights from unique past and present experiences. Though many faculty members produce research and scholarship during their time in the classroom, many choose to continue to practice law and teach as adjunct professors. Here are some of our fantastic faculty who hold a great deal of experience in the legal profession, while also teaching courses here at UB Law.

Hon. Eugene Fahey

Photo of the Honorable Eugene Fahey.

Hon. Eugene Fahey most recently joined our Adjunct Faculty to teach a course in the Spring of 2022. The course, “Amicus Brief Practicum”, introduces students to the fine points of creating a persuasive amicus curiae brief, the friend-of-the-court filing by an interested party not directly involved in the case. Fahey currently teaches the course alongside Michael Pastrick, who served as Fahey’s senior principal law clerk for many years.

Education

  • University at Buffalo, Bachelor of Arts: Political Science
  • University at Buffalo School of Law, Juris Doctor
  • University at Buffalo, Masters in European History

Experience

  • Fahey, a longtime Buffalo resident, served as a member of the Buffalo Common Council for many years before becoming a law clerk to Judge Edgar NeMoyer.
  • Judge Fahey would go on to work as legal counsel for the Kemper Insurance Company before being elected to the Buffalo City Court in 1994.
  • In 1996, Judge Fahey was elected to the State Supreme Court where he presided over cases in Erie County and the 8th Judicial District. Fahey was later assigned to the Criminal Division, and held this position until his appointment to the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, in 2006.
  • In 2015, Judge Fahey was confirmed to the New York State Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court, by then Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Fast Facts

  • Fahey & Pastrick’s course is divided into two parts.
  • In the first half of the semester, students will study the role of this state’s highest Court in law and governance. The instructors will enlighten aspiring appellate attorneys as to how to think like, and how to best communicate with, the Court and its counsels. The instructors also will encourage students to view the law through a panoramic lens.
  • In the second half of the semester, students will apply those behind-the-bench lessons to collectively identify a case or cases appropriate for amicus curiae treatment. Students will partner with potential amici and with faculty to collaborate on the research, drafting, and submission of an amicus brief for consideration in a suitable matter or matters.
