The legal profession is one of hard work and great rewards. While everyone’s path to a legal career is slightly different and unique, some truths stay consistent when deciding whether or not it’s the right path for you. Take a look at these quintessential reasons why you should invest in law school.

1. You love to learn (and then learn some more)!

Law school is difficult, there’s not much about that statement that’s up for debate. But the flip side to all the hard work is the incredible amount of personal learning and intellectual development you can gain by attending law school! The vast array of concentrations and specific areas you can focus on during your studies all contain multiple nuances and will take you down intellectual paths you didn’t even know existed. Being a lawyer is about continuously learning, and that’s one of the best perks!

2. You want to expand your professional marketability

Companies love to hire experts, period. As we mentioned above, those who attend law school study a variety of different subject areas and have multiple concentration options. This means you could end up having a lot of precise knowledge in very diverse areas, making you very lucrative to potential employers. Everyone loves a know-it-all when they can produce results! There are also many job opportunities that you may hear called “J.D. preferred.” These are types of jobs where having a law degree will give you a distinct advantage, but it does not require passage of the bar exam. A J.D. can take you a long way, even if you do not intend to pursue a career as an attorney. This takes us to our next point.

3. You want to enjoy career diversity

If it turns out that you don’t stay on the legal path for your whole career, then your time spent at law school most certainly won’t be for naught! Lawyers learn, build and craft a large rolodex of crucial skills that can readily transfer to several other professions. Strong critical aptitude along with reading and writing skills means lawyers make great researchers or academics. Carefully understanding situations and parsing the facts for particular outcomes means lawyers make great consultants. Lawyers are also fantastic orators and could end up as broadcasters or in sales. The list is endless and with a legal background, you aren’t ever stuck as just a lawyer!

4. You enjoy being your own boss

While it might not happen immediately at the start of your career, many lawyers can and do open their own practice. This usually comes after building a rapport with clients and making a name for yourself in your local or extended area, allowing you to branch out and put your reputation out there with your own practice. It can also have the added benefit of increased earnings and professional status. Of course, there is a lot of work involved, but the dividends can be substantial!

5. You want to make a difference

Last but not least, lawyers—to put it simply and mildly—make a difference. They are the backbone of the justice system and seek to uphold the rule of law, no matter the type of attorney. When you choose to become a lawyer, you’re also choosing to become an advocate for others. Attorneys can be found guiding others through traumatic moments, serving as counselors in difficult situations, fighting for justice when injustice seems to be strengthening, and ensuring that our legal system remains fair and just at every turn. You might not get to wear a cape in your future career as an attorney, but it will certainly feel like it at times!

This is only a short but crucial handful of reasons why law school might be the right fit for you. If you can identify with most of these, then you’re already on your way.
