To the Members of our Law School Community,
Just one year ago, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg paid a historic visit to Buffalo. I was honored to share the stage with her at Kleinhans Music Hall and UB’s Center for the Arts, and we were privileged to have her teach a Constitutional Law class to our students. It was truly an inspiring start to our academic year.
Her visit was indeed an expression of extraordinary perseverance. As we already knew, she was battling cancer and had just completed three weeks of daily radiation. Determined to fulfill a promise she had made to her longtime friend, Wayne Wisbaum, she traveled to Buffalo. Her strength encouraged us in countless ways.
The news of her passing is heartbreaking. Our nation has lost a true icon of the law and a crusader for equality, particularly for women. She embraced her role as a jurist to ensure a society that is ordered, free, and most importantly, fair. We are all forever shaped by her passion and unwavering allegiance to equal justice under law.
She generously gave her time to us so that we could become part of her story, and she could become part of ours. Her voice remains with us as we continue onward in our fight for social justice, grateful for those special moments we shared with her.
Wishing you peace,
Dean and Professor of Law
