COMMENCEMENT 2006:
AWARDS AND PRIZES-- Two new awards were presented at the Center for
the Arts on Saturday, May 20 (one in honor of Professor Emerita Virginia
Leary, a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor who taught international
law at UB, the other in memory of James M. Kieffer, a nationally recognized
trial attorney who practiced in Western New York) when 240 graduates
of University at Buffalo Law School donned their purple hoods for the
first time, flipped the tassels on their mortarboards to the left, and
walked across the stage before family and friends. It was the 117th
commencement for the Law School, and despite a cold and windy day, there
were sunny smiles all around.

COMMENCEMENT KEYNOTE ADDRESS PRESENTED BY MICHAEL BATTLE
'81-"I could say that it seems as though it wasn't too long ago
that I was sitting here at my law school graduation ceremony, with elation
and of course anticipation. But that was 25 years ago, half my life.
In my book that's a long time. Nevertheless, it means a great deal to
be back here to participate in a commencement ceremony with those of
you that are at such a critical point in your lives and, as I have learned,
constitute such a talented class."
COMMENCEMENT STUDENT ADDRESS GIVEN BY MOLLIE MCOMBER-"Here we are,
somewhere between law student and lawyer. Somewhere between the elements
of Knowledge and power of Hope."

LAW SCHOOL'S INSTITUTE FOR LOCAL GOVERNANCE AND REGIONAL GROWTH LAUNCHES
A REGIONAL INFORMATION WEBSITE:
Now more than ever, the Buffalo Niagara region needs reliable, timely
information for sound decision making. To help meet this need, the Institute
for Local Governance and Regional Growth, now a part of the University
at Buffalo Law School, has launched the Regional Knowledge Network (http://www.rkn.buffalo.edu),
a state-of-the-art information resource for the bi-national region.
"The Institute for Local Governance and Regional Growth plays a
vital role in addressing key governance and quality-of-life issues in
the Buffalo Niagara region," says Dean Nils Olsen. "We expect
to see it broaden and deepen its impact on the community.

SUMMER PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWS NAMED: The 11th
Annual Buffalo Public Interest Law Program auction raised just over
$25,000 to be used towards providing UB Law School students the opportunity
to accept unpaid public interest summer positions. Through the combined
dedication and support of Dean Nils Olsen, the UB Law Alumni Association,
the members and leadership of BPILP, our very generous public interest-minded
alumni donors, and co-sponsoring student groups, 19 projects in total
received funding this summer. In addition, two students were awarded
national fellowships.

DAY DISCUSSION LETS JUDGES REFLECT ON THEIR CRAFT: Law Day 2006
brought to UB Law School a wide-ranging discussion of the law, the role
of judges and how the courts do their work, featuring a panel of five
judges at several levels of the judicial system. "Liberty Under
Law: Separate Branches, Balanced Powers" was the theme for the
event, part of a nationwide public education effort sponsored by the
American Bar Association. UB Law's forum was held in the Francis M.
Letro Courtroom on the first floor of O'Brian Hall, organized by the
Bar Association of Erie County.

DINNER CELEBRATES A BUSY YEAR IN REVIEW : The
elegant confines of The Buffalo Club were the perfect backdrop for the
17th annual Buffalo Law Review Dinner on April 27, highlighting unprecedented
achievements for the Law School's premier legal journal. This year's
staff, noted Editor in Chief Sachin Kohli '06, was the first to publish
nine issues of the Law Review. "I am particularly proud of this
achievement," Kohli said, who noted also the publication of the
journal's second annual essay issue. In addition, he said, the staff
made it a priority this year to "reconnect with our nearly 1,200
Law Review alumni" by publishing the journal's first alumni newsletter.
Two of those alumni - coincidentally, both members of the Class of 1982
- were honored for their service to UB Law School and to the legal community.
In their Law School years, Robert C. Schwenkel was an articles editor
for the Law Review, and Denise E. O'Donnell was a senior editor.

OUTLAW DINNER CELEBRATES A RAINBOW OF POSSIBILITIES:
The beauty and meaning of the rainbow was everywhere - from a rainbow
flag behind the dais, to the votive candles on the tables, to a length
of ribbon cleverly woven into the evening's program - at the 10th annual
OUTLaw Dinner. Held May 3 in the Buffalo/Niagara Marriott, the dinner
was a gathering for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender law students,
and their heterosexual allies, and a time to celebrate the diversity
that the rainbow has come to represent.

AN
"AWESOME" DEAN'S DINNER, by Ilene Fleischmann, for the
Buffalo Law Journal: The Law School's Dean's Dinner, an appreciation
event for major donors, has grown enormously over the years. Invitees
make leadership gifts of at least $1,000. A couple of weeks ago, with
reservations hovering near an all-time high of 150, the dinner was served
in the stunning atrium of the Center for the Arts, right on campus.
(In case you're wondering, UB's Campus Catering did a fabulous job.
The red wine reduction on the filet mignon was perfection!)
