The Buffalo Moot Court Board is University at
Buffalo Law School's chief moot court organization.
Membership on the
Board is offered to students who demonstrate exceptional oral advocacy and brief
writing skills through competing in the annual Charles S. Desmond Moot Court
Competition. This over three decade
old competition provides competitors with the opportunity to argue a
constitutional law case currently pending before the United States Supreme
Court. Accomplished lawyers from
Western New York judge competitors in the preliminary rounds, while
law school professors and federal and state judges evaluate the semifinalists
and finalists.
The Board also hosts
one of the oldest tax competitions in the country, the Albert R. Mugel National
Tax Moot Court Competition.
This premier competition features teams from across the
United States
arguing a tax problem formulated by one of the country’s leading scholars in
federal income tax law, Professor Kenneth Joyce.
Awards for the Desmond competition
are made possible through the
Philip Pohl Memorial Fund, created in honor of Philip Pohl, a distinguished UB
Law alumnus and former Buffalo attorney.
