Student Projects

Clinic students are involved in a wide range of projects, including conducting research and needs assessment, drafting legislation, and preparing resource materials.

Examples of student work:

Legislative/Policy

  • Assisted Office of NY Assemblymember Sam Hoyt
  • Created a brochure on Gay and Lesbian Domestic Violence Forum
  • Court and/or law enforcement evaluations for Erie, Monroe and Niagara Counties
  • Developed a training/resource manual for use throughout New York
  • Assisted counties in the development and implementation of countywide protocols
  • Participated in countywide task forces, conducted training and presentations on a variety of topics related to family violence
  • Developed an automated phone information system for hospital ERs
  • Assisted in the development of web-sites and training videos

Research

  • Conducted evaluation studies for community based task forces
  • Conducted a study of the Erie County District Attorney's Office BE SAFE Project
  • Conducted Intimate Homicide Review for Erie County
  • Conducted Victim Focus Groups
  • Conducted an Audit of the City of Rochester's criminal justice system response to domestic violence
  • Assisted in LGBTQ research

Other

  • Assisted Orleans Public Defender's Office in New Orleans, Louisiana in the pilot project which provided pre-trial services to defendants.
  • Developed a policy for prosecutors in responding to battered women charged as defendants
  • Developed culturally specific resources for use in Family Court
  • Presented research on urban farms and green zoning issues to the Mayor of the City Niagara Falls. This community economic development project was conducted by the Clinic for Carolyn's House, a supported housing facility for homeless women and their children.
  • Students administer a pro-se legal clinic for domestic violence victims in conjunction with Volunteers Lawyer Project and Haven House
  • Students have also developed award-winning educational videos explaining the criminal and civil court procedures
  • Created a training video for health-care professionals
