Student Support: Meeting Special Needs

The Law School provides a variety of services to meet the special needs of law students. The Vice Dean for Student Affairs meets individually with students to provide guidance and assistance with academic and personal concerns, as well as assisting students who are pursuing dual graduate degrees.

Assistance is provided to law students through the availability of upperclass mentors and tutors through the Law School's many student organizations. The Student Services Office also maintains a list of tutors for first year students.

The Law School is firmly committed to meeting the needs of law students with disabilities. In 1988, the faculty adopted a comprehensive policy designed to make the Law School and its programs more accessible to all students, and to increase understanding about law students with disabilities within the Law School community and the legal profession.

Students with disabilities can elect to consult confidentially with the Vice Dean for Student Affairs at any time. An individually tailored accessibility plan can be developed with the committee to provide reasonable accommodations for law students with disabilities in any aspect of the instructional program or the examination system. Participation in the four-year program could also be considered in appropriate instances.

This voluntary, cooperative, and individualized planning approach has proven successful in removing barriers and integrating students with disabilities more fully into the Law School community. Prospective students who have disabilities are encouraged to contact the Vice Dean at any stage in the admission process, and are urged to notify the committee concerning their disabilities after they have been accepted. Contact with the Vice Dean will neither jeopardize nor enhance prospects for admission. For information, contact:
