Information Technology

A Sophisticated Electronic Environment

Today’s lawyers must be skilled in using information technology to find and analyze legal materials, as well as to communicate with clients, courts, and government agencies. UB Law School has made a major commitment to providing the infrastructure and curriculum that will build this important set of professional skills.

More than two dozen UB Law courses use websites to deliver course materials, link to relevant Internet materials, and continue dialogue outside the classroom. Law students may also take courses that teach computer skills in a professional context, such as finding law-related information on the Internet to solve specific client problems, or building a website for a law firm.

Within O’Brian Hall, students can use PCs, desktop workstations, and laptop plug-in ports in the Law Library. All of these sites offer standard office software, plus access to specialized legal software, such as LEXIS-NEXIS and Westlaw. Law students can also access computer labs and library workstations in adjacent buildings, including some that are available around the clock. The Law Library’s extensive audiovisual department provides equipment for digital still and video photography, along with editing software and workstations. Laptop computers and projection equipment can also be borrowed from the library for making presentations in class. Classrooms provide both individual workstations for hands-on learning and projection equipment to enhance course presentations and discussions.

UB Law’s information technology is backed by technical support both within the Law School and from the university. Regardless of their prior experience, UB Law students enjoy ample opportunities to build and refine their information-technology skills in a sophisticated electronic environment.
