Biography:

Ruqaiijah Ayanna Yearby's research explores the ways in which laws enacted to grant equal access to quality health care through traditional means, particularly within nursing homes, while ostensibly aimed at protecting the disenfranchised, pose significant barriers to the victims of discrimination and exploitation by limiting their right to pursue legal claims to rectify egregious harms. In addition, her research examines non-traditional means of health care provision, including participation in clinical trials, and the manner in which the goals of scientific research conflict with the health needs of vulnerable populations. The aim of Yearby's research in this area is to highlight the absence of meaningful or sustainable benefit compared to the burden placed on this frequently ignored subset of society.
