The New York Bar Foundation will confer its Lifetime Achievement Award on Maryann Saccomando Freedman '58 during its annual dinner meeting of the Fellows of The New York Bar Foundation, on Friday, Jan. 30, at the Metropolitan Club, in New York City. Freedman was elected to the foundation's board of directors in 1982 and served as its first woman president from 1997 to 2000. She previously served as the first woman president of the New York State Bar Association and the Bar Association of Erie County. During her tenure as foundation president, Freedman created the Fellows District Chair positions to raise awareness of the program and the foundation's activities. She established greater levels of giving by creating the $2,500 Sustaining and Life Sustaining categories, and took meaningful steps to increase foundation contributions, increase its visibility and enhance its grant making program, according to a release from the NYSBA. In 2005, the Maryann Saccomando Freedman Circle of Giving was established in her honor. Freedman now is of counsel to the Buffalo law firm of Cohen & Lombardo, where she maintains a general civil practice and is chairwoman of the matrimonial and family law department. Thomas R. Beecher Jr. '59 of Buffalo was honored at the Founders Day Banquet at the Buffalo Club, receiving the Buffalo Club Medal. Beecher is chairman of Barrantys in Buffalo and is a member emeritus of UB Law School's Dean's Advisory Council. James L. Magavern '59 was listed in the Upstate New York edition of Super Lawyers. Magavern is a senior partner in Magavern Magavern Grimm in Buffalo. He is an adjunct professor at UB Law School and a past recipient of the UB Law Alumni Association's Jaeckle Award and Distinguished Alumnus Award. Magavern is a Buffalo resident. Joel L. Daniels '63 one of Buffalo's leading defense attorneys for the past four decades, will receive one of the top statewide honors at an upcoming event of the New York State Bar Association. He will receive the Charles F. Crimi Memorial Award as the state's outstanding private defense practitioner in New York City on Thursday, Jan. 29 at the annual awards luncheon of the association's criminal-justice section. A sole practitioner in downtown Buffalo, Daniels has long been known as one of the region's top trial attorneys, and in recent years, he has handled many of Western New York's most sensitive and high-profile cases, a spokesman for the association said.
Peter J. Martin '64 has been elected to the management committee in the Bouvier Partnership in Buffalo, where he resides. Martin is a partner in the firm, concentrating in corporate, tax and business law, real estate law, elder law and estates, wills and trusts. Frank J. Clark '67 has retired as Erie County district attorney in Buffalo. He served in the position for 12 years and had a 33-year career as a prosecutor. Clark is a Buffalo resident.
Frederick A. Wolf '67 , special counsel in Damon & Morey in Buffalo, was named to "Who's Who In Law" for 2008 by Business First. Wolf practices in municipal, banking and business law. He lives in East Aurora, N.Y. Donald A. Alessi '69 was named Person of the Year for 2008 by the Federation of Italian-American Societies of Western New York. Alessi is a solo practitioner in East Amherst, N.Y., and a resident of Clarence, N.Y. Warren B. Gelman '70 will be honored on Jan. 22 with the Family Award by the National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York, in Buffalo. Gelman is a partner in McGee & Gelman in Buffalo. He resides in Amherst, N.Y. Paul A. Gianelli '70 was appointed chair of the grievance committee for the 10th Judicial District. Gianelli is a partner in Reynolds Caronia Gianelli Hagney La Pinta in Hauppauge, N.Y. He lives in South Jamesport, N.Y.
Peter S. Gilfillan '71 has been named an Upstate New York Super Lawyer for 2008. He is a partner in Gross Shuman Brizdle & Gilfillan in Buffalo, practicing in real estate, business and corporate law. Gilfillan lives in East Amherst, N.Y. Paul A. Battaglia '72 of Orchard Park, N.Y., was the presenter at the Lorman Education Services seminar "Sales and Use Tax: An Overview and Update" at the Buffalo Convention Center. Battaglia is a partner in Jaeckle Fleischmann & Mugel in the Amherst, N.Y., office and an adjunct instructor at UB Law School. Gerald B. Cohen '72 has written the book We All Have to Die. He reports that the book investigates "the best and worst ways to die, and when and how people die. It asks if religion helps people live longer. It includes the author's views on near-death experiences, what constitutes good life, and the dangers associated with smoking. It also includes a discussion about the death penalty." Cohen, a retired attorney who practiced in Buffalo for 30 years, now lives in Las Vegas. Hon. Mark G. Farrell '72 spoke at the annual meeting of the National Association for Gambling Studies in Adelaide, Australia. He discussed his gambling treatment court – the only one in the world – as a therapeutic judicial intervention. Farrell is an Amherst, N.Y., town justice, a past recipient of the UB Law Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumnus Award and a past president of the association. He lives in Williamsville, N.Y. Leslie Mark Greenbaum '73 of Buffalo has been included in the New York Super Lawyers Upstate Edition 2008. Greenbaum is a partner in Gross Shuman Brizdle & Gilfillan in Buffalo, focusing his practice in trademark, copyright and intellectual property, trade secrets, entertainment, art and sports law, Internet law, contracts, unfair competition and litigation. He is a past president of the UB Law Alumni Association. Kathleen M. Mehltretter '78 will serve as acting U.S. attorney for the third time beginning on Jan. 17 as she replaces Terrance F. Flynn, who is resigning to return to private practice. Mehltretter has been first assistant U.S. attorney since she was appointed in 1998 by former U.S. Attorney Denise E. O'Donnell. Mehltretter previously served as acting U.S. attorney from June 2001 until February 2002 following the resignation of O'Donnell, and from June 2005 to March 2006 after Michael Battle resigned. She resides in Orchard Park, N.Y. Hon. Rose H. Sconiers '73 was appointed chairwoman of the Pillars of Change Advisory Committee for the Buffalo/Niagara chapter of the American Heart Association. Sconiers is a New York State Supreme Court justice, Eighth Judicial District, in Buffalo, where she resides. She is a past president of the UB Law Alumni Association and recipient of the Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumna Award. Nelson F. Zakia '73 was named to The Best Lawyers in America 2009. Zakia practices in HoganWillig in Buffalo, specializing in matrimonial and family law. He is a resident of Williamsville, N.Y. Christopher T. Greene '74 , senior partner in Damon & Morey in Buffalo, was named to the 2008 "Who's Who In Law" by Business First in Buffalo. Greene is a member of UB Law School's Dean's Advisory Council and a former recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. He is a Buffalo resident. Helen Osgood '74 of Buffalo was named to Business First "Who's Who In Law" for 2008. She is a partner in Damon & Morey in the Buffalo office, practicing in commercial lending and credit restructuring.
Pamela Davis Heilman '75 received the Woman of the Year Award from the Organization of Women in International Trade. Heilman is a partner in the corporate and securities and international/cross-border practice group of Hodgson Russ in the Buffalo office. She is a member of the University at Buffalo Council and of UB Law School's Dean's Advisory Council. Heilman is a Buffalo resident. Edward D. Manzo '75 is editor in chief of Patent Claim Interpretation – Global Edition, 2008-09 edition (Thomson West). He is also the originator and editor in chief of the annual book Claim Construction in the Federal Circuit (Thomson Reuters/West). Manzo is a founding partner in the firm Cook Alex in Chicago, concentrating in intellectual property litigation and counseling. He is a resident of Lake Forest, Ill. William F. Savino '75 is listed in the bankruptcy category in the 2008 edition of "Who's Who In Law" by Business First. He is a senior partner and chairman of the business litigation and insolvency department in the Buffalo office of Damon & Morey. Savino is a bridge course lecturer at UB Law School and a past president of the UB Law Alumni Association. He resides in Amherst, N.Y. Thomas E. Schofield '75 , a partner in Magavern Magavern Grimm in Buffalo, was named in the Upstate New York edition of Super Lawyers. He is past vice chair of the international law section of the New York State Bar Association and is a resident of Youngstown, N.Y.
Robert J. Feldman '76 has been named to the Upstate New York Super Lawyers list for 2008. He practices in Gross Shuman Brizdle & Gilfillan in Buffalo, specializing in business law and litigation, business bankruptcy and creditor/debtor rights and education law. Feldman resides in Amherst, N.Y. Cheryl Smith Fisher '76 was named in The Best Lawyers in America 2009. She is a partner in Magavern Magavern Grimm in Buffalo, where she resides. Fisher is a past president of the Bar Association of Erie County. Kenneth A. Manning '77 was appointed to a three-year term on the board of directors of Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo. Manning is a partner in the Buffalo-based firm Phillips Lytle. He serves on UB Law School's Dean's Advisory Council and is a past president of the UB Law Alumni Association and a past recipient of the association's Distinguished Alumnus Award. Bruce S. Zeftel '77 has started his own law practice in Buffalo. His firm handles cases involving commercial and industrial tax certioraris, real estate, zoning and title litigation, bankruptcy and commercial and estate litigation. Zeftel also serves as a mediator for the Federal District Court, Western District of New York. He lives in Kenmore, N.Y.
Jeffrey A. Human '78 , a Williamsville, N.Y., resident, is listed in the 2008 Edition of Upstate New York Super Lawyers. Human is an attorney in Gross Shuman Brizdle & Gilfillan in Buffalo. He concentrates his practice in business counseling and corporate law, taxation, securities law, wills, estates and trusts. Vikki L. Pryor '78 of New Rochelle, N.Y., gave the keynote address at the ninth annual Salute to Excellence in Business Awards and Networking Luncheon in St. Louis. Pryor is president of SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance in New York City. She is a past recipient of the UB Law Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumna Award and is a member of UB Law School's Dean's Advisory Council. William J. Bradberry '79 is president of Urban Systems Associates in Niagara Falls, N.Y., where he resides. Francis M. Letro '79 , a Buffalo solo practitioner, was named to the University at Buffalo Foundation board for a three-year term. Letro is a past recipient of the UB Law Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumnus Award and is a Buffalo resident. Hon. Judith J. Gische '80 was inducted as a justice for the New York County Supreme Court in New York City. She is a resident of Scarsdale, N.Y. Kenneth A. Olena '80 was named to the Upstate New York Super Lawyers list for 2008. Olena practices in Siegel Kelleher & Kahn in Buffalo, where he resides. He focuses his practice in matrimonial law. Hon. Alan M. Beckoff '81 was appointed Kings County Family Court judge in Brooklyn, N.Y. He lives in Hollis Hills, N.Y. Robert M. Elardo '81 of Buffalo was recognized for his legal contributions in the community by the National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York, in Buffalo. Elardo is managing attorney of the Bar Association of Erie County Volunteer Lawyers Project in Buffalo. He is a past recipient of the UB Law Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumnus Award. Maureen O. Helmer '82 has joined the firm Hiscock & Barclay in the Albany, N.Y., office. She is also co-chair of the firm's regulatory practice area. Helmer is former chair of the New York State Public Service Commission and resides in Delmar, N.Y., with her husband, William S. Helmer '82 . William S. Helmer '82 has been appointed vice president, general counsel and secretary of Riverbank Power Corp. in Toronto. Helmer previously served as special counsel to the New York Power Authority. He resides in Delmar, N.Y., with his wife, Maureen O. Helmer '82 . Michael E. Marszalkowski '83 was named to Business First's "Who's Who In Law" 2008 in the immigration category. Marszalkowski is special counsel in Damon & Morey in the Buffalo office and chair of the firm's immigration practice group. He resides in Williamsville, N.Y. Daniel J. Sperrazza '83 was named in the 2008 Super Lawyers, Upstate New York edition, as one of the best lawyers in family law. He is a partner in Cohen & Lombardo in Buffalo and is a resident of Grand Island, N.Y.
Hon. Michael L. Hanuszczak '84 of Syracuse, N.Y., has been designated to preside over the Integrated Domestic Violence Court in Syracuse. He will be the acting State Supreme Court justice hearing family, criminal and matrimonial cases involving families affected by domestic violence. Jennifer J. Parker '84 is the new chairperson of the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau. She is the first woman and first minority to chair the bureau. Parker is president of Black Capital Network in Buffalo, where she resides. Barbara L. Schifeling '84 is listed in "Who's Who In Law" 2008 by Business First. She is a partner in the Buffalo office of Damon & Morey, practicing in the litigation department. Schifeling focuses her practice in medical malpractice defense and environmental coverage litigation. She is a Buffalo resident. Gayle L. Eagan '85 , a Buffalo resident, was a panelist at the Western New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in Buffalo. At a gala at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo, she was also honored for her pro bono work with the Bar Association of Erie County Volunteer Lawyers Project and Legal Services for the Elderly, Disabled or Disadvantaged of Western New York. Eagan is a partner in Jaeckle Fleischmann & Mugel in the Buffalo office. She is vice president of the UB Law Alumni Association and a past recipient of the association's Distinguished Alumna Award. Edward J. Markarian '85 was listed in the Upstate New York edition of Super Lawyers. He is a partner in Magavern Magavern Grimm in Buffalo. Markarian also serves as legal assistant to the New York State Board of Law Examiners. He lives in Amherst, N.Y. Melinda R. Saran '86 has been named Woman Lawyer of the Year by the Women Lawyers of Western New York. Saran is vice dean for student affairs and director of the JD/MSW clinic at UB Law School. She is a resident of Williamsville, N.Y. Frank A. Sedita III '86 was elected Erie County district attorney in Buffalo. Sedita had served as deputy district attorney in charge of the homicide bureau since 2000 and was named New York State's top prosecutor in 2006. He is a Buffalo resident.
Nora B. Sullivan '87 has been named to the board of directors of Independent Health in Buffalo. Sullivan is founder and president of Foxwood Capital in Buffalo and resides in Clarence, N.Y. She is also vice chairwoman of Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo. Hon. Terrance P. Flynn '88 has resigned as U.S. attorney for the Western District of New York in Buffalo, to accept a position as a partner in Harris Beach in the Buffalo office. Flynn was appointed U.S. attorney in March 2006 by President George W. Bush. He is a past president of the UB Law Alumni Association and a Buffalo resident. Thomas F. Knab '88 , a partner in Hiscock & Barclay in Buffalo, was named to the 2008 Upstate New York Super Lawyers list. Knab practices in commercial litigation and labor and employment law. He lives in Williamsville, N.Y. Hon. Paul G. Buchanan '89 received the Youth Advocacy Award from Compass House in Buffalo. He was also elected a delegate by the New York State Family Court Judges Association. Buchanan is an Erie County Family Court judge in Buffalo and presides over the Juvenile Justice Part of the court. He is a Buffalo resident. Patricia E. Erickson '89 and her son, Steven K. Erickson '00 , co-authored the book Crime, Punishment and Mental Illness: Law and the Behavioral Sciences in Conflict. Erickson is chair and associate professor of sociology, anthropology and criminal justice at Canisius College in Buffalo. She is a resident of Hamburg, N.Y. Robert P. Heary '91 was named to the 2008 Upstate New York Super Lawyers list. He is a partner in Hiscock & Barclay in the Buffalo office, practicing in labor, employment and corporate law. Heary is a member of the board of directors of the UB Law Alumni Association and resides in Lancaster, N.Y. Scott B. Schwartz '91 participated in a panel on "Legal and Business Aspects of Producing Films, Film Festivals and Sporting Events," presented by the United States Sports Film Festival in Philadelphia. He practices in insurance litigation, insurance coverage, municipal defense and commercial litigation. Feeley lives in Amherst, N.Y. Drew Baker '94 has become corporate counsel for Kelly Services in Troy, Mich. Baker is a resident of Dearborn, Mich. Hon. Melissa Lin Klemens '94 has been selected to be a critical reader for Gardner's Modern American Usage, third edition, and Black's Law Dictionary, ninth edition. Klemens is an administrative law judge for the Department of Employment Services, Office of Hearings and Adjudication, in Washington, D.C. She lives in Gaithersburg, Md. Bruce D. Reinoso '94 is listed in the 2009 edition of The Best Lawyers in America and the Upstate New York edition of Super Lawyers. He is a partner in Magavern Magavern Grimm in Buffalo, where he resides. Andre Vitale '94 received the Denison Ray Award from the New York State Bar Association. Vitale is the Monroe County special assistant public defender in Rochester, N.Y., where he resides. Sheri L. Lenora B. Foote-Beavers '97 was accepted into the Leadership Buffalo Class of 2009 and is also co-chair of the statewide diversity committee of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York. Foote-Beavers is Erie County Family Court support magistrate in Buffalo and a member of the board of directors of the UB Law Alumni Association. She is a Buffalo resident. David R. Pfalzgraf '97 has been elected to the board of directors of the Kaleida Health Foundation in Buffalo, for a three-year term. Pfalzgraf is a partner in Rupp Baase Pfalzgraf Cunningham & Coppola in Buffalo, where he resides. He is a past member of the board of directors of the UB Law Alumni Association. Mary C. Raymond '97 is named in the Business First list "Who's Who In Law" in the health care category. Raymond is special counsel in Damon & Morey in the Buffalo office, practicing in the business and corporate department. She is a member of the health care, FDA and medical device and pharmaceutical practice groups. Raymond resides in Batavia, N.Y.
William A. Santmyer '97 has become associated with the firm Harter Secrest & Emery in the Rochester, N.Y., office. He previously served for over 10 years as a judge advocate in the U.S. Marine Corps, practicing in litigation and general business. He served in Ramadi, Iraq, and currently resides in Penfield, N.Y. Christopher J. Centore '98 was a presenter at the New York State Bar Association CLE program "Hot Topics in Real Property Law and Practice" in Rochester, N.Y. Centore is a partner in Hiscock & Barclay in the Syracuse, N.Y., office, counseling clients in real estate law, financial institutions, and lending and telecommunications law. He lives in Onondaga Hill, N.Y. Amy E. Schwartz '99 of Rochester, N.Y., was appointed president-elect of the Greater Rochester Association for Women Attorneys, a chapter of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York, in Rochester. She served as a statewide co-chair of the state Women's Bar Association's domestic violence committee from 2005 to 2008. Schwartz is a senior staff attorney with the Empire Justice Center and focuses her practice on domestic violence-related law and policy. In addition, she is an adjunct professor at Syracuse University School of Law.
Steven K. Erickson '00 and his mother, Patricia E. Erickson '89 , co-authored the book Crime, Punishment and Mental Illness: Law and the Behavioral Sciences in Conflict. Erickson has also accepted a position as a John M. Olin Fellow in Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School for the 2008-09 academic year. Rafael O. Gomez '00 was appointed to the management committee in Bouvier Partnership in Buffalo. Gomez is a partner in the firm, dealing with matters involving personal injury/motor vehicle cases, slip and falls, animal attacks and toxic torts. He is a Buffalo resident. William LaRonde '00 is regional justice adviser for the U.S. Department of State in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. He works closely with the Afghan legal community and legal consultants, teaching prosecutors and senior police officials a wide variety of law subjects and mentoring them as part of the State Department's efforts to bring the rule of law to the country.
Emilio Colaiacovo '01 , a partner in the Bouvier Partnership in Buffalo, was elected to the firm's management committee for 2008-09. He specializes his practice in matrimonial and family law and is a resident of Kenmore, N.Y. Michelle D. Maccagnano '01 practices as an associate in Goldberg Segalla in Buffalo. She counsels clients regarding commercial litigation and corporate practice and general litigation. Maccagnano lives in Tonawanda, N.Y. Marco Cercone '02 has become a partner in Rupp Baase Pfalzgraf Cunningham & Coppola in Buffalo. Cercone specializes his practice in commercial and first-party litigation. He resides in West Seneca, N.Y. Kate L. Hill '04 , a Lake View, N.Y., resident, has joined Harris Beach as an associate. She practices in the Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y., offices, in the educational institutions team and the labor and employment law practice group. Paul B. Shipper '04 has accepted a position as associate counsel in the corporate legal department at Excellus in Rochester, N.Y., where he resides. Elisha J. Burkart '05 has become an associate in Jaeckle Fleischmann & Mugel in the Buffalo office. She practices in labor and employment law and litigation. Jennifer Mazurkiewicz '05 practices as an associate in T.W. Gorman & Associates in Dallas, Ga., where she resides. Mazurkiewicz specializes her practice in residential real estate closings and estate planning. Brent J. Nowicki '06 has been inducted into the 2008 Canisius High School Sports Hall of Fame in Buffalo, for his leadership as a lacrosse player. Nowicki is an associate in Hodgson Russ in the Buffalo office and is a member of the board of directors of UB Law School's GOLD Group and a member of the board of governors of Canisius High School. He is a Buffalo resident. Kyle C. DiDone '07 is practicing in Rupp Baase Pfalzgraf Cunningham & Coppola as an associate in Buffalo. He concentrates his practice in commercial litigation and collections law. DiDone is a resident of West Seneca, N.Y.
